The Moon is a natural satellite and the only one belonging to Earth. The Moon has a diameter of 27 percent, a density of 60 percent, and a mass of the planet.

In the book 'The Koran vs. Modern Science According to Dr. Zakir Naik' by Ramadhani and his friends, it is explained that the holy book of the Koran which was revealed about 1,400 years ago has mentioned the sun and the luminous moon.

تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ فِي السَّمَاءِ بُرُوجًا وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَاجًا وَقَمَرًا مُنِيرًا

Meaning: "Glory be to Allah Who has made in the sky clusters of stars and He has also made the sun and the moon shining in them." (Surat al-Furqan: 61)

In Arabic in the Koran, the mention of the sun is Shams. Also known as Siraaj meaning 'torch' or as Wahhaaj meaning 'flaming lamp' or as Diya meaning 'shining glory'.

All three descriptions are appropriate to call the sun, because it produces intense heat and light by burning in it. While the Arabic word for the moon is Qamar, and is described in the Koran as Muneer, the body that gives light (nur).

From this it can be seen that the explanation of the Qur'an is perfect and in accordance with the true nature of the moon which does not emit its own light, but is just a helpless body that reflects light from the sun.

In the Qur'an there is absolutely no mention of the moon as Siraaj, Wahhaaj, or Diya. Likewise with the sun, the Koran never refers to it as Nur or Muneer.

Thus, it means that the Qur'an recognizes the difference in nature between sunlight and moonlight. One of the verses of the Koran also describes the nature of sunlight and moonlight.

 

هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ

Meaning: "It is He who made the sun shine and the moon shining and He appointed manzilah (places) for the course of the month, so that you may know the number of years and reckoning (time). Allah did not create that except by right. He explain the signs (of His greatness) to those who know." (Surah Yunus: 5)
